Should You Outsource Your Blog Post Writing?

Outsourcing your blog posts can be beneficial, and a few years back, I had no doubts about doing it.

Today, I am more deliberate in how I respond to that.

Freelance writing has been the bread and butter for many. Until the wave of AI and AI writing tools flooded the market. Companies and startups eliminated that industry to save money.

But more often than not, they start to produce thin, invaluable, and unedited content, using AI as a replacement instead of a writing assistant.

The same can be said of freelance writers. I put that to the test.

I’ve caught many using ChatGPT as their copywriting tool, without a single edit, and tried to charge me for it (for the record, every blog post here is manually written by me).

But let’s take AI out of the equation and pretend it doesn’t exist.

When You Should Outsource Blog Post Writing

You can still consider it if:

  • You face time management issues
  • Writing isn’t your strength
  • You want content at scale
  • You need more supporting content (for SEO, for example)

When you’re trying to scale, and in other areas of your blog (marketing, Pinterest management), outsourcing content can free up a lot of your time.

This often happens if your niche blog is highly trend-driven or is a news website that publishes multiple posts each day.

A lot of non-native English speakers might not feel confident writing for an international audience, and hiring a professional English writer can help you

  • Write additional content for core pieces
  • Edit existing content with more creative vocabulary
  • Write guides, how-to evergreen content, if your outline is clear

When You Shouldn’t Outsource Writing

  • If you’re unclear about what you want in your posts and briefs
  • If you’re still figuring out the tone of voice for your brand
  • When you have a tight budget (the most obvious)

Cheap can be very expensive, and cheap content or writers who just blatantly copy and paste AI-generated content can hurt your brand or blog.

Even if you don’t publish as much as others, and you can’t afford good writers, consider publishing less with a higher quality at a lower frequency.

But the biggest mistake beginners make is when they hire writers for the sake of writing. When you’re not sure about the direction or tone of voice, then you shouldn’t hire just yet, until you do.

Aim For The Middle

Nothing prevents you from using the best of both worlds and adopting a more hybrid strategy.

I currently write all the content myself, but I use AI to assist me in rewriting some of my sentences.

Create a balance between evergreen content, which can be outsourced easily, versus opinion pieces or personal insights & observations.

Niche bloggers often write all the core content themselves and outsource supporting content for SEO.

By the time they outsource, they know exactly who’s attracted to their brand, tone of voice, and can provide clear instructions to a writer.

Even if you outsource, you can opt to make the final edits before hitting that publish button.

Final Word

A lot of people are afraid to outsource their blog posts, going with the mindset that others might not be as good as they.

But if you plan to hire writers, start slowly. Pay them to write smaller pieces of content and see if they’re the right match for your brand or blog.

If you’re like me, who loves to blog and write, even when English isn’t your first language, you shouldn’t be afraid to do the heavy lifting.

The more you write, the better you get at it, and the better you will know what the tone of voice of your blog posts should be, in case you plan to outsource.
